MediCHIP.
MediCHIP was the first ‘NHS Innovations’ Hub in the London region.
The aim of NHS Innovations was to help improve patient care and generate revenues by realising the potential in innovation and IP development within the National Health Service and healthcare organisations. MediCHIP was established by successful bids for funding in 2001 from the Dept. of Health, the Dept. Trade & Industry and the London Development Agency. The Hub was created as an advisory body to fulfil the Intellectual Property (IP) needs of Trusts within the two South London Strategic Health Authorities. MediCHIP helped provide 20 member Trusts with funded sources of IP expertise including; identification and evaluation of Trust IP, development and commercialisation of inventions and service innovations, IP advice and training, and legal support for the protection of intellectual property and patents.
During 2004-2005 MediCHIP, together with EL!H, Ventures for Health and NCLIH worked towards establishing a pan London Hub to integrate and centralise the skills of each organisation to form NHS Innovations London.
MediCHIP assisted in creating new budgets, new funding proposals for new activities such as Proof-of-Concept funding and time-out schemes for inventors, best practice modules, training packages, assisted with the London Innovations competition and identified suitable accommodation. NHSIL was launched in December 2005 and is currently recruiting member Trusts.
