About MediCHIPMediCHIP provided technological, legal and commercial expertise to add value and exploit Intellectual Property (IP), in accordance with the NHS IP Management Framework and Guidance. MediCHIP’s main activities included:
We worked at the interface between local NHS Trusts and the commercial sector including law firms, financiers and the healthcare industries. Where appropriate we also worked closely with other similar technology transfer establishments in the UK and abroad. MediCHIP was a not-for-profit organisation that worked alongside NHS Innovations to provide specialist technology transfer to identify, develop and commercialise intellectual property (IP) that arose from within the National Health Service. Our HistoryMediCHIP, the Public Sector Research Exploitation (PSRE) establishment for knowledge transfer, was set up in 2002 to cater for the specific needs of the UK’s healthcare sector. It operated as a not-for-profit organisation providing specialist technology transfer expertise to identify, develop and commercialise intellectual property (IP) that arose from within the National Health Service. It operated as part of the nationwide NHS innovations network. MediCHIP covered the SE and SW Strategic Health Authority areas and was thus the innovation hub responsible for the largest sector in London. MediCHIP was supported by 20 member organisations (NHS Trusts and PCTs). MediCHIP served an area with 26 healthcare organisations that employ approximately 60,000 healthcare professionals, serves over 3 million patients and have an annual R&D expenditure that exceeds £200M. MediCHIP was housed in the UK’s leading teaching hospital Guy’s & St Thomas’s NHS Foundation Trust. MediCHIP's mission was to carry out IP development for the improvement of patient care, to bring benefit to the national and local economy, and to generate income. During its three years of operation MediCHIP helped to exploit and commercialise projects and innovations from software [www.hisvector.com] and copyright through to products [www.openhouseproducts.com] MediCHIP was previously jointly funded by the UK's Department of Trade and Industry, The Department of Health and the London Development Agency, and further sustained through membership fees and success-based commercialisation revenues. Our previous main activities were the development and commercialisation of IP within the SE and NHSIL Strategic Health Authority areas, which is now carried out by the pan-London Hub [www.nhsinnovationslondon.com]. MediCHIP remains committed to helping our colleagues achieve the best out of all IP exploitation and is happy to respond to initial enquiries or provide background information on IP to NHS colleagues in the region.
